The M4 bank drafts are among the oddest items of revenue stamped paper. Gray was not used to print Type M's for any other known user, and this is an extremely late use for a Civil War era check which must have been printed before 1876. The two banks in question would have had to have been in the same relationship for almost forty years, and the checks would have had to have been stored somewhere all that time, unused. Unless someone can unearth the full story, these items must speak for themselves, and not very clearly.
