The Excelsior Match Company of Watertown, New York could have been a trade name for matches manufactured elsewhere. Stamps were issued from August, 1872 to January, 1874. 2,352,350 were issued on silk paper.

The Excelsior Match Company of Syracuse does not seem to have had any connection with the one at Watertown, but the former must have bought the stamp die from the latter. Syracuse stamps were issued from April, 1875 through June, 1882. 5,853,200 were issued on silk paper, and 10,541,800 on pink and watermarked papers. The copy above was printed on silk paper.
